While not right on the coastline, Salles-sur-Mer
is so close as to lend the town a coastal ambience. Its territory
also encompasses marshes; indeed, water is present everywhere,
making for the lush vegetation already so appreciated by La
Rochelle's bourgeoisie back in the 18th century. They erected
their country residences in Salles, leaving for posterity a
gracious architectural heritage which adds today to the town's
charm. |
