At first I chose La Rochelle perhaps not so much for itself but as
place where I worked on occasion.
And in fact, it is a place where I can work! A space opening onto the sea, without limits or bounds, which projects one into the distance, a fundamental sensation for an artist who has a quest. Here the apparent flatness of the landscape is deceptive. You think there's nothing to see, but if you walk into the marshes, you realise they're full of life. Like the low, white skyline of La Rochelle, which dissimulates behind its arcades a host of gardens and inner courtyards.
The city has an inexplicable power and a kind of mystery that charm me and probably influence my work.
Then there is
the purity of the light, a gift brought with each coming day. It is an exceptional place to live, even though I am often elsewhere in France or abroad on tour and for work with the Ballet, which is also how I make my living.
Still, you can cross paths with that "elsewhere" right in La Rochelle too,
since it's a city through which a lot of people pass. |
