Greater La Rochelle,
an environmental commitment
|
| This has become one of the area's outstanding features. Long before the talk about sustainable development, urban ecology was part of the Urban Community's agenda. |
n Very early on, the CDA began encouraging "clean" mobility solutions such as bikes, electric vehicles or public transport in preference to private cars. Greater La Rochelle was among the first to tackle waste sorting and recycling, the use of renewable energy sources. It launched city-centre goods delivery, car time-sharing and other innovative experiments.
The CDA continues to pursue that same strong commitment today and intends to play its share in the fight against climate warming.

CO2 balance...
The first step was a diagnosis: the CDA decided to draw up its own carbon balance in order to act more effectively in reducing CO2 emissions.
The largest source of emissions is transport and, in our conurbation, cars. The CDA has sustained its efforts to promote "getting around differently".
The second major CO2 emitter is housing. The CDA promotes renewable energy and encourages energy conservation in both public buildings and private housing.
and ATEnEE contract
To put this "climate plan" into practice on a local scale, the CDA entered into an agreement known as the ATEnEE contract, signed with the Poitou-Charentes Region and ADEME, France's environmental and energy conservation agency.
ATeNEE stands for Actions Territoriales en Environnement et Efficacité Energétique or local action for the environment and energy efficiency.
The contract covers a whole array of actions, from producing biofuel with recycled cooking oil to car sharing or the construction of HEQ (high environmental quality) buildings.
Everybody's business
In every one of its fields of expertise, the CDA thinks in terms of "sustainable development". What kind of a world will we be leaving our children? How can we act together to avoid jeopardising future needs?
This is everybody's business. We generate half of all energy consumption and CO2 emissions in our everyday living. The CDA helps us gain greater awareness of these issues by implementing tools and measures. Likewise, it works to enhance our immediate environment. The more we understand our environment, the better we can act to protect it.
